“Jesus Stood Still”

The Lord convicted me, and has been about the thought of how I try to bring people to Jesus.
So join me in Mark 10...
Mark 10:46–52 KJV 1900
46 And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging. 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me. 48 And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me. 49 And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee. 50 And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus. 51 And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight. 52 And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.
- This is story of Jesus giving Bartimaeus his sight.
Teaching/focus points of this message is:
1. We should never quiet the hurting/broken/shamed/lost and not allow them to experience Jesus.
The whole point of us coming together is for people to be saved.
2. When we see people get saved at The Well, we need to do what the people do: "and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God." (Luke 18:43)Luke 18:35-37
How can we get back to the basics?

1. The Request for Mercy

Illustrate the actual story of Bartimaeus
Bartimaeus - sitting on the ground, completely dependent on others to meet his needs.
Blind.
He hears the footsteps of the crowd coming his way. He hears it’s a large crowd with a lot of voices.
He hears it’s Jesus, the one from Nazareth.
I’ve heard of Him so many times and I’ve heard stories about His miracles and idc what other people say, He has got to be the One God sent!
So on a whim, He cried out, “Son of David, have mercy on me.”
He cried out and requested mercy!!
Mark 10:46 KJV 1900
46 And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.
What do we need to recognize?

a) Hearing was the Initiator

He’s a blind man.
He’s never seen his family members.
Physical blindness is hard.
so as he sits in the streets he begins hearing these footsteps… a bunch of them. He hears a lot of voices and people moving in the same direction. Listening he hears, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
Jesus?? JESUS! He’s here. The Jesus is here?
He heard about Jesus and His person and that initiated the healing he would eventually experience.
Before he ever requested mercy, he had to hear about it first.
Romans 10:17 KJV 1900
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

b. Honesty was Important

He heard “Jesus of Nazareth.”
Notice how he addressed Jesus, though… “Son of David.”
What does that mean?
“Messiah.”
This guy was honest about 2 things:
Jesus’ Title - Son of David, it’s amazing that one son cried out to another.
His needs
You must get Jesus right.
He is sometimes approached as the Big Man Upstairs. and sometimes envisioned more as a mild mannered accountant named Mike than who He really is.

c. He was Insistent

As he cries out, those in the crowd come to him and hush him. Dude, shhhhhh. He’s got a mission to fulfill. He’s the Messiah and (they thought) He was on His way to Jerusalem to take names and take over. Become the king and overthrow the Romans.
When we recognize how needy we really are, nothing will stop us from crying out for mercy.

2. Interesting Response by the Master

Think about Bartimaeus for a minute. He’s crying out for mercy… he’s honest, he heard about Jesus and he just decided, “Idc what other people think, I need mercy!”
Jesus stopped dead in His tracks.
People that walk with Jesus should be so different that they attract others, not push them away!

a) A Time of Correction

Mark 10:48 KJV 1900
48 And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
They tried to silence this man.
Why?
Maybe they thought that the mission of Jesus was too big for this man?
We can never get to the point where we think that Jesus is too busy, too big, or too good to help.
“Hayden, I would never believe that!”
Well we act like that sometimes.
Shhhh.. can’t you see that He’s busy.
Shhhh… can’t you see that He is going to Jerusalem.
Shhhh… can’t you see that He’s perfect and you aren’t.
Shhhh… can’t you see that He’s on a mission to Jerusalem?
The enemy wants nothing more than for the crowd of Jesus to believe the lie that the lost don’t matter.
Here’s how the enemy spreads that lie: “They are too broken to be saved.”
“They are too mean to you, you don’t need to share the gospel with them.”
“They won’t listen to you.”
“You don’t know enough of the Word to share with them.”
The sad thing is that we’ve all believed this lie in some way or the other...
What should I do, Hayden? Repent of that, and choose to trust Jesus’ Gospel… that it is:
Romans 1:16 KJV 1900
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

b. A Time of Commission

I’m going to use you. The same ones that missed it.
ønce we repent, the next thing is to respond the way Jesus did:

3. The Regeneration of the man

The man kept shouting: “Son of David, have mercy on me.”

a) He was Surrendered

He got rid of any hinderance on him.
He took off the outer garment, laid it down, and went to Jesus.
Some in this room know you need to come to Jesus, but you hold onto the things that hinder you from experiencing Grace.
Lay them down today!

b. He was Specific

What do you need?
I need to see.
Be real with the Lord Jesus about your needs. He wants to know

c. He was Saved

“Your faith has made thee whole.”
His eyes were opened.
He was healed, but the language of “made whole” paired with faith, is essentially a picture of saving faith!

d. He was Steadfast

He followed JEsus in the way...
Where would following Jesus lead him?
To the cross.
Mark 10:49 KJV 1900
49 And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.
And Jesus stood still...
when Jesus stopped, the people did too.
Who does Jesus stop for?
The one with a bad reputation - John 4 - making her new
The ones that are hungry - John 6 - making them full
The woman with a demonized daugther - Matthew 15 - making her free
The woman with a bleeding problem - Mark 5 - making her whole
The prostitute that the pharisees wanted to stone - John 8 - forgiving her
The hopeless - giving them hope
The diseased - giving them healing
The broken - putting them back together
The unloved middle schooler - demonstrating His great love
The anxiety driven teenager, not knowing if they have a purpose - He stops and gives you one.
The vape addicted young man - He stops and will set you free
The porn addicted teen - He will make you pure
The disrespectful son - He will change your heart.

b) Jesus is Approachable

the crowd walked this man to Jesus, and he approached Jesus in faith!
It was faith that…
· It was faith that was determined to reach Jesus (he cried out all the more).·
It was faith that knew who Jesus was (Son of David).
· It was faith that came humbly to Jesus (have mercy on me).
· It was faith that humbly submitted to Jesus (Rabboni).
· It was faith that could tell Jesus what it wanted (that I may receive my sight)
What do you want me to do?Jesus wanted him to admit to a need
What’s your need?
This is important.
It wasn’t that Jesus needed to know what his problem was, Jesus knew.
Do you want healing… it’s time to be real?

Conclusion:

When it comes to recognizing lost people around you, who comes to mind?
After hearing this message tonight, did God reveal to you that you may be spiritually blind?
Have you believed the lie of the enemy that the gospel CAN’T help certain people?
What do you stand in need of tonight?
